THE GEOMETRY OF CHIROPRACTIC SUCCESS
by
Jay Handt, D.C.
I
know you are thinking. What in the world does geometry have to do with
chiropractic success? And I’m sure the first things that come to your
mind are x-ray markings, lines of drive, Cobb’s Angle, George’s Line, and
whatever other formulas you know that are involved with structural
integrity and spinal distortions.
In reality, there is only one
geometric equation that will determine your ultimate level of success in
practice. Can you guess what it is?
Give up? The ultimate success
formula is PIE(R)2. I know you might be thinking, that’s not how you
write that formula, and that p is not spelled “PIE.”
You’re right, but being in
chiropractic for so many years, I tend to think about things differently
(and I’m a creative speller, too!), so now I’m going to let you in on my
secret formula and how to apply it in your practice and life.
To understand any equation,
you need to understand each component so that you can apply it. The first
component is P. P can stand for many different things in chiropractic. It
can stand for philosophy, for principles, for purpose and it can even
stand for practice. In this formula, P = Passion. The definition of
passion is an emotion that is deeply stirring or ungovernable.
The next component is I. I
often represents innate, integrity, inborn. But in this formula, I =
Intention. The definition of intention is clear formulation or great
deliberateness.
The component E could
represent excellence, educated, examination. In this equation, E =
Enthusiasm. The definition of enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling.
So, you can understand why,
in my chiropractic world, p is spelled PIE. By now, you should be
wondering what the R stands for. Some of you may be thinking radiation,
research, remarkable, retrolysthesis, maybe even radiculopathy. Rest
assured, it isn’t any of those! In my equation, R = Radical. The
definition of radical is a considerable departure from the usual or
traditional.
Now in geometry, pr2 equals
the area of a circle. In the chiropractic formula, PIE(R) 2 equals the
vast area of success you can achieve in practice and in life. In
geometry, when you “square” numbers, it means that you are multiplying
that number or formula by itself. In my equation, you do just that! When
applied, it’s guaranteed to give you exponential growth and lifetime
fulfillment. Now, let’s bring this formula to life.
What I’ve always found in
practice is the more passionate I am, the more excited I am. Passion is
what gives me a compelling reason to step out of my comfort zone and talk
to everyone I meet about chiropractic. And both you and I know that the
more people you come in contact with, the greater the chance of making
some of them lifetime practice members! Your passion is the big WHY, the
big reason you are doing what you’re doing. Passion is your moral compass
which keeps you on course towards achieving your vision.
Now multiply that passion by
intention. Intention has a lot to do with your vision. The more powerful
your vision is for your practice and life, the more intense and clear
your intention becomes. The more motivated you are to fulfill your WHY,
the more every act you do is filled with positive direction and a
pre-conceived determined intention for doing it! Intention is what gives
you direction. If passion is your moral compass, then intention is the
road you’re traveling.
Now multiply your passion and
intention by your enthusiasm and you should begin to feel the power that
this equation is producing. And as you feel that power, your level of
enthusiasm begins to sky-rocket! The most important thing to appreciate
about enthusiasm is that it’s contagious. It moves through an audience
(or patients) like a virus, infecting them with your passion and
excitement for what you do. Enthusiasm is the secret ingredient that
makes you more attractive (no matter what you look like!). It’s not about
looks; it’s about being a people magnet. Everybody wants to be associated
with enthusiastic people! In turn, they want to turn everybody they know
on to your energy! This ultimately gives you the opportunity to get new
people excited about chiropractic. So, if passion is your moral compass,
and intention is the road you’re traveling, then enthusiasm is the fuel
to power your journey!
I know this all sounds great,
and that it’s moving you in the right direction, but without the R, it’s
just a PIE in the sky! You’re just sitting in your chair feeling great
about your wonderful thoughts! It’s the R that takes the thoughts,
emotions, feelings, clarity and focus and puts them into action! It’s the
R that becomes responsible for animating your life. It’s the R that
determines whether you’re stuck in a soap opera or starring in an action
super-hero film! The scary part is that you get to choose which role you
want to play, and you’re the director!!! You see, hidden within the R of
radical is the R of risk. Radical and risk are intimately related. You
know that in life, the greater the risk, the greater the reward. The more
you are willing to challenge the status quo and risk doing what hasn’t
been done or create a new twist on what has been done, the greater the
rewards and results. When you become radical, it allows you to do things
that other people are afraid to do. It allows you to jump out of your
comfort zone and do whatever it takes to be noticed! It forces you to
push the envelope of opportunity and let nothing stand in your way. You
are aware of every interaction, every meeting, and every person as a
potential source of new practice members. The more radical your approach,
the more excited you are, and more importantly, the more fun you have!
If you want to go from good
to great, there’s one more component to the equation. It’s a seemingly
little component compared to the rest of the equation, but when applied,
it separates the successful from the ultra-achievers! It’s that secret
ingredient that anyone who has ever made it REALLY BIG in life has
applied, either consciously or unconsciously! PIE(R) will equal a more
successful, fulfilling life, but if you’re like me you’ll want to use
that secret ingredient, and that is to SQUARE IT! When you do that, you
are unstoppable, invincible, and possibly even a super hero to your
practice members and to your profession! So now, the question is not
what’s holding you back, it’s what’s going to drive you forward into
harnessing this equation and using it to change the world?! This is all
so powerful that you’re ready to go out and start implementing everything
now!
Every person you adjust makes
a profound difference in the health of our planet.
So, what are you still
sitting here for? Get your butt out of that chair and do something
radical NOW!
Which are you?
Dr. Bob MacEwen
A young
woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were
so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted
to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as though
just as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother
took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each
on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed
carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground
coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about
twenty minutes she turned off the burners.
She fished
the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and
placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a
bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots,
eggs, and coffee," she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did,
and noted that they were soft.
The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After
pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee.
The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then
asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same
adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being
subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid
interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became
hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the
boiling water, they had changed the water.
Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your
door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"
Which are you?
Am I the
carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and
become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the
heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a
financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?
Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with
a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water,
the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it
releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things
are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.
When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you
elevate yourself to another level?
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The
brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go
forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone
around you is crying.
