Like a Diamond
by Dr. Bob Crystal
It
Sometimes I hear chiropractors say the following. “If pain relief is what
the patient is after, there are drugs out there that will help them more
than any adjustment.” Of course the point they are trying to make is that
we need to get out of the therapeutic, allopathic, arena. I agree, but,
and this is a big but, BUT, what benefit is chiropractic to each person?
We want it all nicely packaged up in an easy explanation, but how do you
explain the following?
I had a patient, dying of AIDS (or the drug treatment of it). I was
called to do house calls for her. When I first arrived, she was in so
much pain, she was lying in her bed in fetal position. I served her by
working to restore a clear communication pathway via adjustments. Upon my
return for the second visit her husband said this to me: “I don’t know
what you did, but she has had more relief from your adjustment than she
even got from the strong morphine they have her on.” He went on to say,
“This is the first time she was able to get out of bed and sit at the
table with the family during meals in a long, long time.” In fact, she
got out of bed and sat at the dinning room table while I was there that
visit.
So, drugs can do it better? I think not. Maybe we need to rethink that. I
am not saying we are pain treaters, but our explanation is not up to par
with what we actually do. We are still “hiding our light under the
bushel”. You see, what makes a diamond so beautiful is the fact that it
has many faces. I think chiropractic is like a beautiful diamond, too.
Non therapeutic, I suppose. But it is not that cut and dry. I think we
are still living in fear and therefore don’t want to tell people how much
chiropractic can help them. Maybe we need to figure out how to present it
better. That is what we need to do when we get together at New
Beginnings. In the meantime, whatever we think we are doing, just
realize, the power within each person is so awesome, that when released
to go where it needs to go, miracles do happen. That is true of the
symptomatic and the non-symptomatic patient. Peace.
BEST ADVICE EVER
A DOG'S PURPOSE FROM A SIX YEAR OLD.
I hope everyone reads this little story. Its our
New Beginnings CHIROPRACTIC attitude and lifestyle. Maybe we
can share it through and e-mail.
Love to all,
Michelle Price, New Beginnings Seminar Coordinator
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to
examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named
Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy,
Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and
they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying
of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and
offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their
home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told
me they thought it would be good for
six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They
felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience the
next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog
for the last time , that I wondered if he understood what was
going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped
peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's
transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker's
death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter
than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly,
piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came
out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never
heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that
they can learn how to live a good life -- like
loving everybody all the time and being nice,
right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do
that, so they don't have to stay as long."
Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you
would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be
pure ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day , be silent, sit close by and
nuzzle them gently...
Hope you have a wonderful Summer and I
look forward to seeing you this fall at New
Beginnings.
