Web Usage for Health Continues to Grow in USA

Harris poll reported in their April 2003 Newsletter that consumer Internet usage for health issues continues to grow. According to a study they performed over the years 2001 and 2002, "About 80 percent of all patients we surveyed now search the Internet for information about health-related topics. On average, patients—by which we mean people with chronic medical conditions—are going online for health information about nine times a year. The vast majority of them report that the information they find enhances their understanding of their health problems, has an impact on how they manage their overall health, affects how they communicate with their doctors, and improves their compliance with prescribed treatments."

The study also asked a question of the doctors who participated. That question was, "What is the primary reason you started using the Internet to communicate with your patients?"  The answers for the years 2001 and 2002 were as follows:

Answer Year 2001 Year 2002
Your patients requested it 41 % 51%
To improve your overall efficiency 30% 28%
To deliver better care 16% 12%
Other 9% 9%

From these statistics and all other studies I've seen the patients are always ahead of the doctors in web usage for health information. Harris Interactive is citing a significant increase of Internet users who go online to look for information about health topics. This study and others have spawned the name "cyberchondriacs" for these users. In the U.S. cyberchondriacs numbers have grown from 54 million in 1998 to 110 million in the latest (March 2002) survey. Both Harris Interactive and The Pew Internet & American Life Project found that large numbers of cyberchondriacs look for health information not only for themselves, but for their spouses, children, friends, parents, and other family members too.

Some Web Humor, Even During War

Regardless of your political stance on the war in Iraq, the News has filled the airwaves with a tense anticipation and a hope that the realities of war are minimized.  However, in the middle of this scene, many have found an unexpected source of humor in the daily reports that came out of Baghdad from the Iraqi Minister of Information.  His daily statements of total nonsense flew in the face of the reality happening around him.  His straight faced reports of fantasy has propelled him to an almost cult status.   One such website that has become very busy as of late is a website dedicated to him at: www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com .  This site contains a library of his quotes as well as a section that places him in different places and times in history, giving his reports on those events.  I usually do not have time for these types of diversions, but I have not laughed so hard in a long time.  Have a look, but do not drink milk at the same time. (just something I learned in my youth)

This website gave me the idea to have the Iraqi Minister report on some chiropractic events.  At the risk of being politically incorrect, here might be what he would say.

"CCE does not want to hurt Life University or its students they only seek to insure the quality of chiropractic education"

"FCLB is not interested in taking over continuing education. PACE is strictly voluntary."

"The National Boards are not interested in adding any new tests."

"WFC does not want to foster their view on the chiropractic profession in the international community."

"If we all just merge everything will be better."

Chiropractic Medicine is only a name.

Now You Know Services and Products & Updates

Now You Know Websites: Our combination of features, updates, message quality and quantity of content has made Now You Know the largest provider of individual web sites to the chiropractic profession. Over 30 templates to choose from, over 700 pages of content, and many other features at a great price, make our website service the most talked about in chiropractic.  Check out the ever growing list of features on our website at: www.nowyouknow.net, then click on our services and then website service.

Now You Know Email Newsletter Service: Our newsletter is the most popular patient email newsletter in chiropractic.  We estimate that each month over 100 thousand people read these each month.  Current and hard-hitting articles on health and chiropractic issues delivered directly to your patient's inbox has made our newsletter service unsurpassed in chiropractic.  Additionally, our newsletter service now has a feature that allows our subscribers to easily email their entire list of patients by sending one secure email that propagates to their entire list.  So not only can your patients get the great stories and articles from the NYK Newsletter, but they can also get updates directly from the doctor!  Is there any wonder that hundreds of offices love this service!

Echiropractic:  We push the technology window to the limit with online chiropractic pamphlets, cards and office letters for you to use.  This service allows the subscriber to send unlimited individual emails directly to patientsEach Echiropractic message can be customized with a message from the doctor.  This service is not unlike some other popular online greeting cards, with one big exception. These messages are for chiropractic offices, with chiropractic messages.  See what everyone else is talking about by visiting www.nowyouknow.net

New NYK Website Service Features: Subscribers to our website service are now able to update certain portions of their websites in real time themselves.  This "Self-Update" feature means that you will have the ability to make changes to portions of your website instantly!  This gives you the option to post daily announcements, office news, or other time-sensitive events immediately on your website.  Of course, we still have a full complement of skilled webmasters ready to make updates for you.  But for those who want to make simple quick announcements or updates, this new feature will be a quick and efficient way to stay up-to-the-minute with your web updates.

New NYK Newsletter Service Features: Subscribers to our newsletter service can now send out their own mass emails to their patient list.  This is in addition to the monthly Now You Know Newsletter we currently send out to the subscribers list.  For years we have been encouraging doctors to supplement our NYK newsletters with information and articles they create themselves.  The only problem has been that sending a self-made mailing to a large list is difficult and does not always work.  In many instances Internet Service Providers (ISPs) limit the number of addresses that can be in a single email to a maximum of 25. In these cases many of the recipients on your list may never receive your emails. With our new NYK Newsletter "Self-Mailer" feature, you will be able to send one email you create that will be propagated to your entire patient email list so that each person gets a single email from you.  This allows you to easily and securely send messages out to your entire patient base as often as you need to. This new feature is revolutionary, and will make NYK Newsletter subscribers the most up-to-date professionals in healthcare.

NYK Patient Lecture Presentation: Now You Know offers the most graphically impressive patient lecture available in chiropracticUse hi-tech graphics and dazzling images to teach your patients about chiropractic and your office.   Now available with both a CD-Rom for Laptop and LCD projectors, as well as 35mm slides for slide projector presentations.  This presentation also comes with an audio tape of the program being given live to be used as a training tool.

Chiropractic Depot:  A new website, www.chiropracticdepot.com has opened for business.  This new website is intended to feature supplies and equipment to help chiropractors and those involved with chiropractic have better access to the tools and services they need to grow and reach more people.  One of the first products offered on this site at a greatly reduced price are two versions of highly versatile and easily transportable display booths.  These two displays are the ultimate spinal screening tool !  They are also perfect for chiropractic vendors who regularly go to shows and for chiropractors who do screenings or other presentations. They come in two sizes, the larger ShowMax display and the smaller ShowStyle version.  Both the ShowMax and the ShowStyle fold up completely into a self contained suitcase that can be easily brought with you to any event.
