Life University Sells Campus to Pay Debt What may well have been the most beautiful and impressive campus in chiropractic has been sold. According to news reports in the Atlanta area, Life has reached an agreement and will be selling their 89-acre campus with 12 buildings to the state, and the property will become part of neighboring Southern Polytechnic State University. This sad news is a blow to the entire profession as what may be the most impressive modern campus in chiropractic is gone forever. The deal with the state will allow Life University to lease back the buildings that are currently being used for academics and administration. Life will have an option to purchase back only those buildings in the next 5 to 8 years. However, much of the campus, including the state of the art sports facility will no longer be a part of Life. This sale has been preceded in the previous months by Life selling, or placing for sale, all properties off the main campus. Among the properties that were also sold were all their patient clinics including the state of the art largest clinic that was opened several years ago. To see the various newspaper reports of these events please see our updated links on the news at Life at www.dc2be.com.
Congress Passes New Tough SPAM Bill According to a November 23, 2003 AP story, the US Congress moved significantly closer to the first-ever federal protections against unwanted commercial e-mails with the House passing a bill Saturday that would impose new limits on sending irritating offers on the Internet. Final approval by lawmakers could come before Thanksgiving. Passed on a 392-5 vote, the House bill largely mirrors "Can Spam" legislation the Senate approved last month. Supporters hoped slight differences between the two measures could be resolved before Congress adjourns for the year. The Bush administration has supported anti-spam efforts. The bills would prohibit senders of unsolicited commercial e-mail from disguising their identity by using a false return address or misleading subject line. They also would prohibit senders from harvesting addresses off Web sites and require such e-mails to include a mechanism so recipients can indicate they do not want future mass mailings. The chiropractic implications to this new law and others are clear, do not SPAM your community! There are companies that offer services that claim to send bulk broadcast emails out to your community. This is SPAM and can be subject to prosecution. The NYK Email Newsletter service allows doctors to send broadcast emails to their lists. However, NYK policy is that all recipients on the doctor's list must be either patients or people who have subscribed to the doctor's list. Additionally, every email sent out through our system has a link that allows for an automatic unsubscribe function. Our advice is simple, if you are not sure, don't send it to them. Don't SPAM, not only is it annoying, it is also illegal.
CCE Is At It Again By Henry Rubinstein, DC, Esq. Upset with its current inability to force subluxation-based schools into submitting to the primary care model by its so-called "reaffirmation" of accreditation processes, CCE is proposing to change the Standards by which it accredits. These changes will force all chiropractors to practice by the medical model leaving little room for a subluxation-based practice. CCE wishes to change: · Proposed
Definition of Diagnosis change In short: the CCE proposes that all programs teach physiological therapeutics as a mandatory requirement. They propose to alter the definition of diagnosis to require the medical approach to arriving at a diagnosis and they propose to allow for a waiver to requirements whose approval is dependent upon a committee chosen by one person. Although the proposals allow for only a one-year waiting period to reapply for accreditation instead of the current two-year period, this is still not a viable system. None of these three proposals have been approved for submission to the Board of Directors YET. But if approved, they will go to the Board for vote at the Annual Meeting in 2004. In order to succeed, CCE requires that the profession remain silent and complacent during the comment period for any proposed rule changes. CCE has supplied "notice" by way of an announcement on their website at http://www.cce-usa.org Please go to the CCE website at http://www.cce-usa.org , read the proposals and send them your input immediately, as there is a short window of opportunity for your voice to be heard. If you must, at the very least, just write them and say you are opposed. The deadline for submissions is January 5, 2004. Please pass this along to everyone you know, and if possible copy me with your submission at doclaw@miamichiro.com . Rubinstein, D.C., J.D., Miami, Florida. DrHenry@MiamiChiro.com CCE part two: Coalition issues position of "No Confidence" on Council on Chiropractic Education The Chiropractic Coalition- comprised of the International Chiropractors Association, Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations, and the World Chiropractic Alliance -- has issued a position paper which expresses concerns about the state of chiropractic education and the Council on Chiropractic Education. The Position Paper enumerates several critical flaws in the CCE, and notes that "These issues represent dangerous, potentially destructive and urgent matters that have the potential of destroying the chiropractic accreditation process from within, and have brought about a massive erosion of profession-wide support for and confidence in the CCE." New My Mission Poster Well Received The response to the re-release of the second edition of the "My Mission" poster has been overwhelming. Three years ago we at Now You Know produced 5000 posters called "My Mission for Today". These posters were not for sale but were given out free at each event that we either appeared at, or had a booth at. The demand for these posters was overwhelming and we went through all 5000 of these posters in a little over one year. We have just released 5000 of these new second generation posters. And once again these posters are FREE to anyone we see in person at any of the seminars or conventions Now You Know has a booth at. The posters are 18 x 24 inches and are perfect for framing in standard poster frames. Anyone who would like to get one needs to come to one of our booths at any of the events we participate at. These posters are available on a first come first serve basis, and limited numbers will be present at each event. To see our calendar of events and appearances, please check the "NYK Upcoming Seminars and Shows" section of this newsletter below.
