Chiropractic Under Attack - Again! The above is a photo of a billboard that appears on I-95 in Connecticut. The Anti-Chiropractic group has struck again. This time it is a huge billboard between exits 25 and 24 on 95, on the Bridgeport/Fairfield border. The group "Victims of Chiropractic Abuse" VOCA is behind this and has erected a billboard on I 95 and taken out yellow page ads in all counties in Connecticut, where they claim to be a referral source to chiropractors. The Connecticut Chiropractic Council (CCC) has taken action and has already contacted the billboard company LAMAR Advertising, the ICA, Attorney General’s office and Department of Consumer Affairs. The Council is in the process of filing official complaints and is making every effort to get that billboard down; as we did in 2005, click here to see that story. Dr. John Maltby, International Chiropractors Association President commented, “This is far more than a citizen or citizens expressing their opinions with all of the free-speech protections we enjoy in the United States. This is the marketplace equivalent of crying fire in a crowded theatre, is a hate-based and anticompetitive campaign in which thousands and thousands of dollars are being spent. The highly professional nature of the campaign indicates that there is more at work here than just an angry individual with a grudge against chiropractic, who also happens to have incredibly deep pockets.” Although the group behind this claims to be a consumer group, the money that has been spent clearly suggests that much deeper pockets are involved. National Vaccine Information Center - Fighting Our Fight One of the issues that many chiropractors have always been passionate about has been vaccinations. Although there may not be any official numbers, it is believed that a fair percentage of chiropractors do not have their children vaccinated. The debate on this will rage on for some time and would take much more room than we have here to discuss. However, the one thing that has been almost universally agreed to in the chiropractic community, is that people should have the right to make an informed decision and choose what they feel is best for the health of their family. Even though "freedom of choice in healthcare" is a core belief of chiropractic, we have done little as an organized group on the specific issue of vaccinations. Fortunately for us, there is one group that has. The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) has been a consistent voice for freedom of choice on the vaccination issue. This consumer based group was started by Barbara Loe Fisher and Kathy Williams. Their website can be seen at www.nvic.org. In addition to the many issues they deal with regularly, the NVIC has been very active recently in light of the heavy-handed overkill crackdown in Maryland. (See links to some of these stories below in the "The Good, the Bad, and the Subluxated!" section of this newsletter below). We urge all Chiropractors to support the NVIC with your membership in this consumer organization. They are fighting our fight and they operate on a shoestring budget based upon membership dollars. Please go to their website and join, and or make a donation. In the latest NVIC newsletter they covered the Maryland issue with the below quote. I think it is fitting in light of the recent Maryland issue. "In Germany, they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up." - Martin Niemueller
