 News Your Patients Should Know About - Chiropractic Cuts Blood Pressure

Each month for the last 8 plus years we at Now You Know have been tirelessly continued our search for current news and information about Chiropractic for the NYK patient newsletter.  Well over a hundred thousand patients read this newsletter from their doctors each month.  We take our responsibility seriously.  We believe a newsletter should be NEWS!  It should not be re-written health pamphlets or opinions.  All of the articles we include in our newsletter are written based on current news and research and all site the reference that shows just how credible and current they are.

We don't mind telling you that some months it is quite a chore to find current articles or research on chiropractic to write about in the newsletter.  We sift through hundreds of articles and news stories, read dozens of journals, all to find a few good educational articles that we would be proud to show to our patients. 

That being said, this coming month will be a little easier.  Just after the mailing of our last newsletter a story hit the press with the following headline:

"Chiropractic Cuts Blood Pressure"

This story was in several high profile press outlets including, of all places, "WebMD"!  Wow, even the medics are touting this story.  The research is published in the March 2007 Journal of Human Hypertension, and was done at University of Chicago, School of Medicine.  (Interestingly enough, other than WebMD, this story was NOT picked up by other US news outlets.  It did appear in news stories outside the United States.  Hmmm, do you think something is amiss here?  A story this important should have run in all US news outlets.)

We will be writing the lead article for the April NYK patient newsletter based on this research and the subsequent press.  We usually like to add quotes that are available from the stories or researchers and this months is a doozy. In one of the WebMD articles, study leader George Bakris, MD, after seeing the results of the study was quoted as saying, "When the statistician brought me the data, I actually didn't believe it. It was way too good to be true," Dr. Bakris said. He continued, "The statistician said, 'I don't even believe it.' But we checked for everything, and there it was."

Big Insurance Attacks Connecticut Chiropractic Council - Your Help Needed!

The Connecticut Chiropractic Council must have been doing something right.  They are now under attack by American Specialty Health Networks (ASH) , and the Federal Trade Commission. Because they spoke out, they have drawn the attention of these groups and now have to defend themselves because they were defending chiropractic, and chiropractic patients. Please see the letter below.

LEGAL ACTION FUND

Dear Doctor,

As some of you may already know, the Connecticut Chiropractic Council received a letter from American Specialty Health Networks, Inc. (ASH), alleging that the CCC has been involved in improper activities aimed at undermining ASH's recruitment of DC's under its service contract with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

In addition, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has advised the CCC that it has commenced an investigation into the same or similar subject matter. We do not know whether the investigation is a result of a complaint bay ASH. In any event, the FTC has already made a request for the CCC, and some of the CCC's members, to provide the FTC with a significant amount of documents and information regarding ASH's campaign in Connecticut .

While the CCC denies the allegations made by ASH and does not believe that it has engaged in any wrongdoing, it has become necessary to raise money quickly to pay for the CCC's legal fees so that it can protect the interests of the CCC and its members.

Do You Have Your National Service Provider Number?

Did you know that as of May 23, 2007 you must have a "National Service Provider Number"?  That is the deadline for getting your number.  ALL healthcare providers will be required to have these numbers for filing and processing health care claims and other transactions. 

According to the official US government release, “The purpose of these provisions is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to assign these unique identifiers.”

The International Chiropractors Association has sent out a press release on this important issue and has a story on their website.  To read about it and find links to apply for the number please click here.
