National Medicare Conference
The
National Conference on the Future of Chiropractic in Medicare, hosted by the
International Chiropractors Association (ICA) will convene on Thursday,
April 24, 2008 in Washington, DC, with a powerful array of speakers and
presentations. The objectives of this day-long, Medicare forum will be to
focus the attention of the chiropractic profession on this struggling but
vital program, and foster a positive dialogue on how chiropractic’s Medicare
role can be strengthened and Medicare patients can best be served.
“Doctors who want to have a voice in how chiropractic responds to both the
challenges and opportunities emerging in Medicare will want to be at this
conference,” said ICA President Dr. John Maltby. “Everyone in the profession
is not only welcome, they are needed and wanted, because we understand that
it will take all of us, working in an historic collective effort, to secure
for chiropractic the role it deserves in caring for our senior citizens.”
ICA hopes that this conference will help craft a profession-wide action plan
to address the urgent need for Medicare reform, and of chiropractic’s unique
and positive role in helping the nation’s seniors.
This
unique day-long program will also address a host of emerging issues,
including:
-
The
looming health care provider shortage in the face of 80 million Medicare
beneficiaries and the opportunities it opens up for chiropractic.
-
New
legislation necessary to allow doctors of chiropractic to “opt out” of the
Medicare program and privately contract with beneficiaries for services,
without any government role.
-
The
documentation demands on chiropractic Medicare providers and how this may
impact future legislative initiatives.
-
The
new Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program now being tested by CMS under
which independent review and collections contractors are being deployed to
review Medicare claims to determine the “appropriateness” of payments to
providers.
-
The
pilot Medicare Savings Account program and the opportunities it offers
beneficiaries to take greater control of their personal health care choices
and spending.
-
The
need for immediate Congressional action (S. 2785) to postpone the 10 percent
Medicare physician fee cuts scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2008.

Good Morning America
Show Does Report of Chiropractic Helping Blood Pressure
On March 25, 2008 the ABC morning show, "Good
Morning America" aired a segment with Robin Roberts showing how
chiropractic helps high blood pressure. The video later appeared on the
popular publishing site YouTube at the following address:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TTzKwvNbP0.

The parallel printed story also appeared on the ABC
News website at (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=4520614&page=1) and starts with a profound statement, "Though doctors are
unsure of what causes blood pressure to increase, a new study suggests
that a specific type of neck adjustment may reduce hypertension for some
of the 65 million Americans battling it."
The article referenced the University of
Chicago study, published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, that showed
that the patients in that study who received chiropractic adjustments saw
their blood pressure drop an average of 17 points. The article quotes study author George Bakris
MD, University of Chicago Medical Center hypertension specialist , "We set
up a double-blind study to really look and see if in fact this procedure
was affecting high blood pressure." The article and video notes that,
"The C-1 vertebra, located at the top of the spine, operates like a fuse
box in the body."
Medical doctor and ABC medical consultant Tim
Johnson was reserved in his reporting of the findings but was still
impressed. He stated, "[There are] a lot of unanswered questions. But I'm
telling you, this catches our attention because of a significant drop in
blood pressure. It absolutely deserves more study." He continued, "The
truth is we really don't know that vertebra at the top of the neck is in a
critical area where the brain stem, the lower part of the brain, is
involved with regulation of blood pressure. It's theoretically imaginable
that changing the anatomy of that area may have effect on regulating blood
pressure."
A version of this story was included in the
NYK patient newsletter that went out to the practice members of NYK
newsletter subscribers. Hundreds of thousands read the NYK article.
We encourage all DCs to feature this video and steer patient toward this
news story.
