In This Issue:
This September will kick off an ongoing campaign to educate the public about the health implications of subluxations and the benefits of living a life free of nerve interference. This campaign, initiated by the Georgia Council of Chiropractic has also been adopted by the Florida Chiropractic Society and the International Chiropractors Association.
Subluxation Awareness will be a non-profit campaign with several continuing efforts.
Subluxation Awareness Month: September is Subluxation Awareness month. Coinciding with the anniversary of the first adjustment to correct a subluxation, it is the goal of Subluxation Awareness to seek political proclamations and news events bringing light to this issue. As the years progress more state, and federal authorities and politicians should recognize this yearly event bringing more public awareness.
Subluxation Awareness Educational Programs: Subluxation Awareness is meant to be a grass roots campaign that doctors can participate with. In time doctors will be able to join Subluxation Awareness and receive materials and information that will allow them to put on educational events, screenings, and other local programs that bring the issue of subluxations to their communities, and firmly place that doctor as an authority in this area.
Subluxation Awareness Educational Materials: Educational materials such as power point presentations, posters, pamphlets and written material will be available for Subluxation Awareness. These can be used in your office or in conjunction with outside events you set up in your communities.
Subluxation Awareness Resource: A website is currently being established that will be a repository for information related to subluxation. The website, www.subluxationawareness.org has been donated by Now You Know and will become a resource for information on subluxations, as well as a place for doctors to go to find out how to participate in this campaign.
Currently Subluxation Awareness is on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/subluxation. All those wishing to be a part of this campaign should look to Facebook until the website has been fully developed. Please look us up on Facebook and give us a "Like".
Help is needed in a number of areas. Researchers with access to articles that can be linked into the website will be needed. Administrators will be needed as this program grows. State chiropractic leaders are needed to have their respective state societies endorse this process and encourage their members to participate, as well as seeking proclamations on Subluxation Awareness by elected officials.
In the near future an open conference call will be held to discuss the plans and direction of Subluxation Awareness. Volunteers will be needed to help with this effort and are encouraged to be a part of this effort. For over 100 years we in chiropractic have been using various campaigns to get our foot in the door. Now it is time we enter through the front door with our message. Join the effort.

Normally, we do not publish articles related to the passing of chiropractors. But recently we have lost several important figures that have had a profound affect on my life, and I felt it necessary to acknowledge their passing and their contributions.
Dr. Donald Gutstein passed recently. For those who might not know him, in my opinion he was one of the most impactful instructors chiropractic has ever had. He was one of my teachers at NYCC in the 1970's and also taught for several years at Life University in the 1990's. Those who had the privilege of sitting in one of his classes remember the tough love approach that forced you to think like a chiropractor. During my short stint as an instructor at Life I used to sit in the back of Don's classroom just to watch and marvel at the master at work. Even today, some 30 plus years later, I can still vividly remember the lessons and stories I got from "The Gut" as a student. I know my life is better having known him. And I am sure there are many more who feel the same way. Don's final years were as a teacher at a middle school in Georgia. It is fitting that the quintessential teacher's memorial service be held at a school. The memorial service will be held at South Cobb High School in Georgia on Saturday, August. 6th at 11 AM.
Dr. Francis “Butch” Corbin was one of the kindest souls in chiropractic. A tireless warrior who always gave of himself for the chiropractic cause. He was a leader in his state of Washington and in the International Chiropractors Association, where he served on their Board for many years. I also had the privilege of having him serve as ICA Vice President during my years as President. I can think of no better person to have served with in helping ICA and chiropractic. ICA named him Chiropractor of the Year in 1999. I will remember him most for his love and passion for chiropractic.
Dr. E.J. Nosser passed away July 2nd in Shreveport Louisiana. I met Dr. Nosser only twice, once at Cleveland College of Chiropractic, and once at an ICA banquet. He is among a diminishing number of chiropractors we all owe a debt of gratitude to. Dr. Nosser was the last known chiropractor who was sent to jail for practicing chiropractic before his state actually licensed our profession in 1974. According to his son, Dr. Nosser was working a day and a half a week until he died. Chiropractic is better for having had him as one of our profession.
