ACA Establishes College of Pharmacology and Toxicology - ICA Reacts

In what some are calling a monumental shift the American Chiropractic Association has established a new College of Pharmacology and Toxicology that could lead the way toward chiropractor's getting prescriptive abilities.  The following is directly from the ACA's press release dated  March 2, 2015.

"The establishment of a College of Pharmacology and Toxicology that would operate under the auspices of the ACA Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders. The purpose of the College is to further educate the chiropractic profession on clinical matters related to the widespread use of both prescription and over-the-counter medications and nutritional supplements. Currently, all U.S. chiropractic educational institutions require education in this subject, and programs such as the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and EHR meaningful use criteria require participants to have familiarity with common medications and drug interactions."

The release seems to merge together the pharmacology and toxicology aspects of this new college and suggest that this subject matter is already taught in chiropractic colleges.  In fact, all chiropractic colleges teach some form of toxicology, but most have no training in pharmacology.

Critics of this move accuse the ACA of trying to move the profession of chiropractic toward drugs. Many groups, including the International Chiropractors Association, have reacted strongly, asserting that this college reveals the drive toward drugs agenda.

"For nearly a century the ICA has advocated clear lines of distinction between the health care professions. Chiropractic is a drugless health care discipline. Adding drugs to our profession would make it simply another branch of medicine," said ICA President Dr. Michael S. McLean. "Does our society really need another drug-dispensing profession?"

The ICA release also states, "ICA holds that the public is entitled to one truly drug-free system of health care and doctors of chiropractic are fully trained and qualified to fill that role with proven clinical and cost effectiveness. For more than a century, the marketplace has sustained and supported chiropractic on the basis of its unique, drugless approach to health and healing. This is especially crucial at a time when our society at-large is recognizing the alarming complexities, costs and complications of a drug-based approach to treatment and the trend is strongly in the direction of a minimalist approach regarding drugs, and with good reason."

This new move by the ACA seems to stand in stark contrast to the previously stated position of all the groups of the Chiropractic Summit (including ACA) adopted at Seattle, Washington on November 7, 2013, which reads: "The drug issue is a non-issue because no chiropractic organization in the Summit promotes the inclusion of prescription drug rights and all chiropractic organizations in the Summit support the drug-free approach to health care."
