Avoiding Viruses
Remember
when as health care professionals, getting a virus was a physiological situation
only? Today, getting a virus commonly means something completely
different. 
All
too often
I get an email from a colleague who tells me that their computer has crashed due
to a "virus" they picked up somewhere along the way. There are
several things you can do to avoid getting hit with a virus.
You can purchase one of the anti-virus programs. Probably the two most common are "Norton Anti Virus" and "McAfee Anti Virus". These two offer a good measure of protection against incoming viruses. You should remember though that new viruses are created regularly. This means that you must download updates from these companies on a regular basis to keep your anti virus program current. With most programs a certain free download period comes with the purchase of their program.
Probably one of the most effective ways of preventing a virus is common sense. Most viruses can only get you if you open them up. This means that they come as attachments to your email and you open them up and allow them to work. To avoid this there are some simple rules you should follow:
Never open attachments from someone you do not know. You don't know what you are getting so don't trust it.
The
most dangerous attachments are those with the file extension
".exe". These are actually small computer programs. Opening one asks the program to
run on your computer. Unless you are real sure of what you are opening,
never open an .exe file.
Most files that are pictures or just text (.jpg and .txt) are safe. These are normally OK to open as they are not programs.
Be wary of attachments from someone you do know that you were not expecting or that do not have a personal explanation of what they are. Some of the more devious viruses infect someone's email program causing it to send more copies of the virus on to the people on their mailing list. I occasionally get an email from someone I know with a suspicious attachment that I did not expect from them. In these cases I error on the side of caution and delete!
When in doubt - "Shift Delete". Holding Shift and Delete at the same time permanently removes an email from most mail programs. Just hitting delete places it into your deleted folder where it sits until you empty that folder and give other opportunities for it to be opened again.
Probably the most common virus isn't really a virus, its a hoax. I can't tell you how many hoax emails I get from colleagues who are well intentioned but were taken in by some message they got via email. These messages do not pose a real danger, but they are annoying as you may get dozens of them that you have to deal with in a short period of time. Probably the best and most humorous of the email I received recently was an email dealing with this very subject. Medically Run Internet Company Selling to Chiropractors Suffers Setback
One
of the other Internet companies now selling web presence to chiropractors is
ChiroClinix. For those who may not be familiar with this company, ChiroClinix is
an offering of a company called CareClinix. This company's CEO is Dr. Saul
Quint, a Medical Doctor who practices at Yorkview Medical Centre
in Toronto Canada. 
The president of the company is Mr. Gary Rewald, who
prior to immigrating to Canada, in 1994, held various senior management and
Board of Director positions at companies in South Africa. The Director of
Chiropractic is Jerrod Goldin DC, who owns and oversees a multidisciplinary private
practice in Toronto that includes chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy,
reflexology, nutritional counseling and acupuncture.
Some of the trouble this company ran into is when the National Association of Chiropractic Attorneys issued it's latest release concerning e-commerce and chiropractic offices. In response ChiroClinix responded through a regional sales manager with, "we have decided that in the best interest of our subscribers that the online Patient Store be disabled..." How effective are Search Engines?
This
is a common question asked by many of or subscribers. The simple truth of
the matter is that they are not very effective. Some doctors want the
Internet and their web site to be a panacea of new patients who were floating
around online and found their lifelong chiropractic care through a search
engine. Well that's just not the way it happens. 
Like most practices you get the vast majority of your new patients through referrals. Patients in your office who know what you are about and understand the value of your care tell others about you. So obviously, the better educated your current patients are, the more referrals they make. This is where your web site comes in. Instead of seeing your web site as a phone book ad, start seeing a web site as an online chiropractic orientation designed to educate and reinforce chiropractic to your current patients. When this happens these current patients will tell more people about you!
Your web site can then really help you. Now in addition to educating your current patients, these newly enthused patients have a place to send their friends to see what you are about. Instead of just saying, "You just have to believe me and go to my chiropractor." They can also say, "You have to check out my chiropractor, and they have a great web site that tells you all about them" This referral to your web site means much more than someone hitting your site while just searching in cyberspace.
Chiropractic Politics and the Internet
The
Internet now plays a more important role in politics and elections. In the
last set of National elections all candidates found it essential to use the Internet
to further their image and offer more information than would be 
available
in any other forum. Even Now You Know was
involved as we did go outside our usual chiropractic realm by hosting and
designing a website for an Illinois Congressional candidate. Our web site won an
award by being one of the "Fifty Best Political Web Sites."
Chiropractic politics is no exception. As most of you have probably noticed, the International Chiropractors Association is having elections this year. And as you may have also noticed, the candidates for ICA president have already been using the Internet to deliver their message. So far the declared candidates are Dr. Thomas Klapp of Michigan and Dr. DD Humber of Georgia. I have received no less than six emails from the candidates on what they stand for. To date I have not noticed a specific web site for either candidate but we will report on them if they create sites.
The one very nice luxury I have during this election is that I am not personally running for anything! As this current administrations comes to an end so will my term as ICA Chairman of the Board. And if all goes according to plan, I will become a regular dues paying member again, (for the first time in almost 2 decades).
