There are just times in your life when you wish you had a tape recorder handy. A couple of days ago I was in the office seeing patients when one patient walked in and asked me a question about an article in the Now You Know Newsletter we had just sent out. He first wanted to know about a chemical listed in one article that had to do with tomatoes and the heart. But then he went into the article about how more MDs were referring to chiropractors, then he spoke about the article about the Olympic athletes and chiropractic care. From there he jumped into a discussion on the article about how disappointing back surgeries were.

His enthusiasm kept rising about the articles when he then said, "Boy Doc, I'm really glad you send those out every month!" After this few minute conversation he then happily made his next appointment and went on his way. Immediately following his departure, I turned to the doctor with me and said, "boy I wish I had that on tape!"

I often try to describe to doctors the benefits of getting good health and chiropractic information out to patients on a regular basis. But this incident really nailed it down for me. It is common to hear patients say that they really liked the newsletter this month. It is even common to get questions on a particular article, but it was a pleasant surprise to have someone review almost every article and ask pointed and inquisitive questions with such enthusiasm.

In our offices on a daily basis we would love to sit every patient down and give them an orientation on chiropractic. Then we would love to go into other issues such as vaccinations, medication overuse and the benefits of a wellness approach to health. But most practitioners do not have the luxury of that kind of time. We therefore have to depend on having some communications process to disseminate that valuable information for us. This one patient made it abundantly clear to me that email newsletters are the way to go. Not only do these newsletters stimulate discussion and thought, they also make stronger patients and therefore better referring patients.

I did end my conversation with this exuberant patient with one question, "You did hit the FORWARD button didn't you?"

This is an issue near and dear to all of us, and these people are out in front spreading the truth about vaccinations. The following article comes from their online email. The ICA's new profession-wide publication has just hit your mailbox. This new publication hits the stories that need to be told in our profession in a no-nonsense way. In the first issue of this publication you will find stories on the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards and their attempt to take control of continuing education. Additionally, there is a story about the Canadian conspiracy to paint chiropractors as dangerous.

April 25-28, 2002 is the next exciting New Beginnings program hosted by Dr. Jim Dubel. If you have not yet been to one of these programs you owe it to yourself to get to one. This April meeting promises to be one of the largest and most exciting. in addition to the great lineup of regular New Beginning speakers, there will be special appearances by Dr. Rob Schiffman, (the busiest solo practitioner in North America who sees over 2500 visits per week by himself!) and Dr. Guy Reikman president of Palmer College.
