Spreading the Chiropractic Message in 2002

This coming year should be an exciting one for everyone.  More than ever before we have the ability to tell our chiropractic story to more people than ever.  As I look back on 2001, we at Now You Know have seen tremendous growth.  We now handle the Internet needs of over 500 offices around the world.  Estimates are that over 100,000 people read our chiropractic message each month.  This means that we are now having the kind of impact that we have always dreamed of.

The tools of the Internet are affordable and effective.  These tools are becoming as essential as a phone to the office that wishes to communicate chiropractic to the community in this day and age.  This being said we must remember that the drug industry will not roll over and play dead.  They have stepped up their efforts by using a media that is not available to us in any quantity, television.  To this end, millions are being spent each day to indoctrinate the public on their concept of "better living through chemistry."  To this end they have been effective as prescription drug expenditures have risen in the United States by double digit percentages for the last five years.  Last year the drug industry posted a whopping 17% increase in sales.  Health care expenditures, (mainly medical and drug care) has risen to be at 1.3 trillion dollars last year! (Yes that's trillion with a "T")

So what can we do?  We fight back with the tools we can afford that we know are effective.  Whether it be with our company or not, every chiropractor should be using the Internet to counter the billions in drug advertising.  Every chiropractor should send out email newsletters to their patients.  Every chiropractor should have a website that is more than a self serving online phone book ad, but rather a web site that educates and stimulates.  And every chiropractor should make their patients aware of the vast amount of information on health and chiropractic available to them at the click of a mouse.

We have two choices.  Move ahead and spread the message, or wait until 2003 to see how many more people are on drugs, how many more suffer needlessly, and how many more die without ever having their power turned on by a chiropractic adjustment.  As far as I'm concerned, we at Now You Know choose to step up our efforts to spread the message in 2002.

ICA Introduces New Chiropractic Newspaper

The International Chiropractors Association will be introducing a new chiropractic newspaper titled, "The Chiropractic Choice."  This new publication promises to be top quality and hard hitting. I am personally pleased to see an organization with the history and size of ICA starting such a publication to help offer to the profession a perspective they might not normally get anywhere else.

In addition to their bi-monthly publication the ICA will be expanding their weekly online news report called the "Chiropractic New Service", or "CNS" for short.  This online newsletter should more than span the gap between the printed publication issues.  Details on how to subscribe to this online publication should be available in the first issue of The Chiropractic Choice.

We at Now You Know are not only excited  for the ICA but we are also willing to put our money where our mouth is in support of this effort.  We are purchasing the back cover of the paper to advertise our services.  This represents our largest advertising effort to the entire profession to date.  And for those who may be asking what kind of a deal did we get?  I can tell you that we did not get any special deal.  Now You Know is paying the same full retail rate for these advertisements as would anyone else.

Are People Using the Web for Health Information?

The below is an excerpt from the "mylifeplan" online publication from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California.

Survey Finds Teens Turn to Web for Health Info

By Reshma Kapadia

NEW YORK, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Teens and young adults are flocking to the Web for health-related information as much as they are downloading music and playing games online, and more often than shopping online, according to a national survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation released Tuesday.

A survey conducted by the foundation found that one in four people 15 to 24 years old say that they get "a lot" of health information online and a significant proportion of youth are acting on what they find.

"We had no idea that so many young people were going online to get health information. A lot of us assumed that they were going online just to download the latest Red Hot Chili Peppers song so that was a surprise. It is even more so than adults," said Victoria Rideout, vice president and director of the program for the Study of Entertainment Media and Health at the foundation.

Nearly 40% of those surveyed said they have changed their own behavior because of information they found on the Web.

This type of article is not new.  Every month I see stories like these that show us just how important this medium is.  Occasionally, I still hear some doctors tell me that they doubt their patients are online.  Consider this, the largest Internet provider today is AOL (America Online).  Recently they just announced that they have topped the 33 million subscriber mark. At an average of $20 per month, you do the math and see how much they are taking in.  No wonder this upstart company could buy a corporate institution like "Time -Warner".

Oklahaven Kicks Off 2002 "Have A Heart"

We at Now You Know urge you to join the chiropractic colleges and hundreds of chiropractic clinics across the United States and Canada who are helping the non-profit Oklahaven Children's Chiropractic Center, by conducting a Have-A-Heart 2002 Campaign in your office during the week of Valentine's Day, February 12-17. You will be supporting an internationally recognized nonprofit organization and increasing the chiropractic awareness of your own patients at the same time!

Since Valentine's Day is here, what a better way to contribute to chiropractic than to help children get the benefits of chiropractic care at this wonderful center. Please take a moment and see how easy it is to participate in this program in your office.  Not only will you be doing children a lot o good but you will also be saying to your patients and the community that you care.  Please visit their web site to learn more.
