The Life University Saga Continues
The biggest story inside our profession continues to be the ongoing saga of Life University. Of course there continues to be a host of rumors that have been circulating around this issue. I recently received several emails congratulating me on my being appointed as the interim president of Life. Hmmm, news to me!
To help set the record straight let me present these snippets on the issue.
As fluid as this situation is, rumors and misinformation make it even more confusing, especially for the students. Living here in the Atlanta area, not a day goes by when Life is not in the media. To help keep the profession up to date on what is happening we have created a news source for all media and releases related to this story. We have archived every article that we have come across on our student resource site, www.dc2be.com.
Nearly Two in Three U.S. Internet Users go Online for Health Information
According to an Associated Press story of May 23, 2002, nearly two in three U.S. Internet Users go Online for Health Information. This information comes from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
The reaction from the medical community is mixed as some are worried that patients will make judgments that are not "medically sound", while others say there is no reason for alarm.
"A lot of people are going back to their doctors when they have questions or checking with other authoritative sources," said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew project. "There's no evidence people are doing completely whacky self-diagnoses." The PEW survey of Internet users did show that eighteen percent of those surveyed said they had used the Internet to diagnose or treat a medical condition without consulting a doctor.
The numbers and impact are staggering as the PEW study shows that some 62 percent of Internet users, or 73 million Americans, have gone online for health information. About 6 million use it on any given day, more than those who actually visit health professionals.
Probably one of the most telling comments to appear in the AP article was one from Vicky Rideout, a vice president at the nonprofit health group Kaiser Family Foundation. Her comment summed up the consumer Internet usage issue when she said, "I think people have more skepticism in theory. But in practice the Internet is rapidly becoming one of the most common sources of health information. So while they may say they don't trust it as much, they are relying on it."
