Life
University Verses the CCE
I'm sure that the biggest story in chiropractic over the
last week or two has been the loss of CCE accreditation by Life University
School of Chiropractic. Personally, I am stunned and
outraged at these events. Whatever the issues between Life and the CCE,
thousands of students and hundreds of Life employees are being made to suffer because of it. This is just
not right! If the CCE has issues with Life U then they should work it out
between the two of them. Do whatever you can before taking actions that
hurt the student community and the chiropractic profession in such a way. My
feeling is that CCE should reinstate Life and search out other means to settle
academic differences it has with Life. Use some common sense, lives are at
stake! (Enough of my ranting.)
Additionally, the International Chiropractors Association has dealt with this issue on a conference call board meeting held June 18, 2002. The Board of the ICA voted unanimously to issue the following proclamation concerning this issue:
The International Chiropractors Association recognizes and acknowledges the contribution to the chiropractic profession, and to the greater health and quality of life for all mankind, made by the Life University’s College of Chiropractic and its Founder and President, Dr. Sid E. Williams.
The ICA Board of Directors has grave reservations as to the appropriateness of the actions of the Council on Chiropractic Education in their revocation of accreditation status for Life University’s College of Chiropractic. The effects of these actions upon the faculty, staff, students, alumni and their families, lacks compassion by causing the innocent, including the patients, to suffer.
The ICA calls for the immediate and objective reevaluation of the accreditation status for Life University’s College of Chiropractic and further calls upon the CCE to find other, less collaterally damaging means of correcting any legitimate outstanding academic issues with Life University.
As bad as this situation is, rumors and misinformation make it even worse, especially for the students. Living here in the Atlanta area, not a day went by the first week where the story was not on the front page or on the evening news. I have fielded hundreds of questions from students, DCs and others who are interested asking 'what's the deal here'? Everyone wants to know what, why, and how.
To help bring some light to this rumor-filled situation
I have collected everything I could find on this issue from every online source
I know of. We have placed them in one place in order to help the students get
more information and make some sense of this crazy situation.
Presently we have over 30 articles, papers and letters on
this issue listed in one place. If you are interested in seeing a
chronological listing of the events concerning this issue, as well as CCE
documents and letters, please go to

Internet Usage on Health Issues Climbs
According
to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, "About
6 million Americans go online for medical advice on a
typical day. That means more people go online for medical advice on any given
day than actually visit health professionals,
according to figures provided by the American Medical
Association." This means that according to this study 62% of
Internet users, or 73 million people in the United States, have gone online in
search of health information.
What are they looking for? According to the study the results list out as follows.
93% of health seekers have gone online to look for information about a particular illness or condition.
65% of health seekers have looked for information about nutrition, exercise, or weight control.
64% of health seekers have looked for information about prescription drugs.
55% of health seekers have gathered information before visiting a doctor.
48% of health seekers have looked for information about alternative or experimental treatments or medicines.
39% of health seekers have looked for information about a mental health issue such as depression or anxiety (up from 26% in August 2000).
33% of health seekers have looked for information about a sensitive health topic that is difficult to talk about (up from 16% in August 2000).
32% of health seekers have looked for information about a particular doctor or hospital.
