Physicians create inexpensive Web sites offering health data to patients (AmedNews)

From the September 9, 2002 issue of the American Medical News comes an article with the title, "Physicians create inexpensive Web sites offering health data to patients".  This article chronicles the failure of the big medical websites such as  Drkoop.com Inc., a company once valued at more than $1 billion, that was sold In July, for only $186,000.

In the face of these  large site types of failures the article continues by saying, "Despite the failures of big-bucks health sites, people continue to look for medical information online. Some physicians have learned to use the Web to their advantage, saving their patients -- and themselves -- time and money." They go on to say, "Many of the companies that tried to make big money by offering health information on the Internet are dead, but the demand for their product appears to be greater than ever."

The article goes on to talk about the success of smaller, less expensive websites put online by individual doctors.  They claim that the reason that the larger sites failed was that there was no market for consumers who wanted to pay for health information.  Instead, the preferred model is smaller less expensive web sites that offer free information to consumers.  David Francis, managing director of the Nashville, Tenn., office of Jefferies & Co. Inc., an investment banking and institutional securities firm states, "Health information is so widely available that consumers simply aren't willing to pay for it. They don't want to pay for it and they don't have to pay for it because there are so many free resources available both online and offline."

This is the model of health information that we at Now You Know have been offering for the last 4 years. Its nice to see that the experts are confirming what our hundreds of subscribers have known.  Just more confirmation that with Now You Know, you are ahead of your time.

Are You In Compliance With Hippa?

Did you know that every practicing doctor has until October 16 2002 to either have filed a plan of compliance with HIPAA or to have requested an extension?   Most DCs do not realize the gravity of the situation that these new regulations have on everyone's practice.

According to the governments own HHS websites, "Who Should File?  If you are a covered entity and will not be compliant with the HIPAA Electronic Health Care Transactions and Code Sets standards by October 16, 2002, you must file a compliance plan in order to obtain an extension. A covered entity is a health plan, a health care clearinghouse, or a health care provider who transmits any health information in electronic form in connection with a transaction for which the Secretary has adopted standards at 45 C.F.R. Part 162. These terms are defined at 45 C.F.R. 160.103. The term “health care provider” includes individual physicians, physician group practices, dentists, other health care practitioners, hospitals, nursing facilities, and so on."

In 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) became law. It requires, among other things, that the Department of Health and Human Services establish national standards for electronic health care transactions and code sets. October 16, 2002 was the original deadline for covered entities to comply with these new national standards. However, in December 2001, the Administrative Simplification Compliance Act (ASCA) extended the deadline for compliance with HIPAA Electronic Health Care Transactions and Code Sets standards (codified at 45 C.F.R. Parts 160, 162) one year – to October 16, 2003 – for all covered entities. In order to qualify for this extension, covered entities must submit a compliance plan by October 15, 2002. Completion

To assist Information Age readers a web site www.hipaachiropractic.com has been set up with information and a self-help compliance program that can be purchased from Compliance Plan for Doctors Inc.  This plan is being offered through the website www.hipaachiropractic.com at a reduced fee for $25.00 less than you could purchase it directly from Compliance Plan for Doctors Inc.

Barge Was Right! - EGATS!

When most of us may feel like we are getting older, it seems that Dr. Fred Barge looks younger each time I see him.  When asked how he does this, he will usually jestfully reply that it is his occasional "libation" that keeps him young.  Now it appears that science agrees with him.

From the August 13, 2002 issue of the Wall Street Journal comes an article on research that shows the benefits of an occasional beer. The article starts off by saying, "After more than 20 years of research and scores of studies on the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on health, beer is slowly bubbling to the top as a beverage that not only lifts spirits but delivers protection against major ailments such as heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, diabetes and dementia."

In response the National Beer Wholesalers Association quickly put on a seminar titled, "“Health and Beer”.  The seminar even went so far as to put out a press release that stated: “Eat right, exercise and drink a beer a day may be the way to keep the doctor away.”    Probably more cautious,  Julie Bradford, editor of "All About Beer" magazine, says: “Well , we’re not saying that beer is the new wonder drug or suggesting that people take two beers and call us in the morning.”

Dr. Norman D. Kaplan, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, has studied alcohol’s impact on health as part of his 40 years of research into the causes and treatment of hypertension. He concludes that “the benefits of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol is well beyond contention.”  In specifically referring to beer, Dr. Kaplan cites two recent large-scale studies: in one, a look at 70,000 female nurses showed that those who drank moderate amounts of beer had less hypertension than did nurses who drank either wine or spirits.  He also noted a survey of 128,934 adults in the Kaiser Permanente managed-care system. It showed that male beer drinkers among the group were at a statistically significant lower risk of coronary-artery disease than were men who drank red wine, white wine or spirits.

Well after reading this all I can add is,  Fred, next one's on me!   ENUF SAID !
