Happy 107th Anniversary to Chiropractic
Some times it is good to remember and reflect that 107 years ago an event happened that set the course for all our lives. Chiropractic got started in Davenport Iowa 107 years ago. In 1895 a “magnetic healer” as he was called, by the name of DD Palmer operated an office on the corner of Second and Brady street in downtown Davenport. Dr. Palmer, as he was known, noticed on that day the janitor who worked in his building was nearly totally deaf.
This janitor was a gentleman by the
name of Harvey Lillard. Upon questioning, (probably very loud questioning)
Harvey explained to Dr. Palmer that he had lost most of his hearing 17 years
earlier when he was bending over and felt a “pop” in his upper back or neck. Dr.
Palmer examined the area and noticed a bump which he determined to be a spinal
vertebra out of position. It seemed that Harvey noticed this bump right after
he lost his hearing. Having a knowledge of anatomy, Dr. Palmer convinced Harvey
to allow him to try to fix it by pushing the bone back into place.
History is uncertain as to whether it was one visit or several, but the result was Harvey got his hearing back! From that point DD Palmer changed his practice over to this new method of replacing bones that were out of position and allowing people to heal. His practice grew and the profession of chiropractic was born.
Within two years Dr. Palmer opened the first school of Chiropractic on Brady Street in Davenport. It was his son Dr. BJ Palmer, who continued the school after the death of DD. It is the son BJ, who is given credit today for growing and developing the profession into what it has become today.
From this one simple event the course of each of our lives has unfolded. It is worth a moment to ask ourselves the question, "If this event had not happened, what would our lives be like now?" With this reflection in mind, let us make the most of this gift we have been given.

HIPAA Deadline Quickly Approaching
CMS, formerly HCFA, has ruled that any health care provider that performs electronic transmission of protected health information (claims, e-mailing patient data, sending patient information on line to qualify patient coverage, etc...) must have a compliance plan by October 16, 2002.
The latest interpretation is that if you do electronic
transmittal of claims, e-mail patient data or qualify insurance over the
internet you must have a written compliance plan by 10/16/02.
If you do none of the above and submit your Medicare claims
on paper then you do not need a HIPAA plan. However, by October 16, 2003 all
claims must be sent electronically and then you will need a HIPAA plan.
The government will allow health care providers to get a 1 year extension from October 16, 2002, however the provider must certify and submit that much of the work has already been done. In the opinion of many experts this SHOULD NOT be done. By utilizing the workbook provided by Compliance Plan for Doctors, you can have a completed plan in few hours of "easy" work and not place your name on the Federal Government's list of providers who have delayed completion of the plan.
To assist Information Age readers a web site www.hipaachiropractic.com has been set up with information and a self-help compliance program that can be purchased from Compliance Plan for Doctors Inc. This plan is being offered through the website www.hipaachiropractic.com at a reduced fee for $25.00 less than you could purchase it directly from Compliance Plan for Doctors Inc.
Vaccine
Conference to Separate Fact from Fiction
On November 7-9, 2002, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) will mark its 20th year of preventing vaccine injuries and deaths through public education by hosting the Third International Public Conference on Vaccination at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia (just minutes from Reagan National Airport). In what promises to be its most historic conference yet, NVIC will explore the association between vaccination and chronic disease and disability by bringing together distinguished speakers from the United States and around the world to once again shine a bright spotlight on vaccine injury and death and questionable one-size-fits-all mass vaccination policies.
The conference will feature more than 27 speakers, including Dr. Gerry Clum of Life West, with a broad spectrum of expertise, including immunology, epidemiology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, chiropractic, family practice, psychology, constitutional and public health law and bioethics. Topics will range from mercury-in vaccines and autism; anthrax vaccine and Gulf War illness; SV-40 in vaccines and cancer to conflicts of interest in clinical trials. Fifteen hours of Continuing Education credits are available for Doctors of Chiropractic
NVIC's First and Second International Conferences on Vaccination, held in 1997 and 2000 were attended by more than 1,000 parents, health care providers, legislative staff members, lawyers, media representatives, public health officials and members of health and vaccine safety advocacy organizations from the U.S., Canada and Europe. The vaccine conference, which is the only one of its kind coordinated by non-governmental, non-industry sponsors, is distinguished by the unique energy and excitement generated when the brightest and bravest of health care professionals and vaccine safety advocates come together to speak out about one of the most controversial health care topics today.
For more information on the conference, agenda, speakers, and events go to the NVIC website at: www.909shot.com .
