From the October 22, 2001 issue of the USA Today comes a story that shows that all kinds of doctors are getting into the Internet to deal with patients. The story begins, "A growing number of U.S. pediatricians are going online — creating Web sites, responding to parents' concerns by e-mail and asking specialists to "examine" ill kids by e-video."

Dr. Douglas Stetson, a San Francisco pediatrician and consultant on computer use in medicine reported at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting in San Francisco, that busy parents with routine inquiries find it convenient to reach their kids' doctors online. Allison Kempe of the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver said, "Many pediatricians offer e-mail forms parents can use to request appointments or refill their kids' prescriptions."

The lesson for us chiropractors is that we need not be caught sleeping. Less than half of all chiropractic practices have a web site. Most do not email patients. The Internet is a media that we can use to compete evenly with the medical profession. Never before has the playing field been so level. If you are not using the Internet as a major source of information resource for your patients, you are missing the boat. The tools are available and affordable. Either we tell the story, or the medical profession will.

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT:
ACTION NEEDED ON VETERANS INITIATIVE

The International Chiropractors Association is calling on all members of the chiropractic profession in the United States to immediately contact Members of the United States Senate and urge their support for passage of H.R. 2792, legislation that would at last provide for meaningful chiropractic benefits in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). This landmark legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives on October 23^rd and is now being considered by the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. Every U.S. Senator should be contacted but immediate action is needed with the members of the Senate Veterans Committee. The names of Committee members and contact information are listed below. Additional help in finding your U.S. Senator can be obtained from ICA's website at www.chiropractic.org, or by calling the ICA office at 1-800-423-4690. Details on H.R. 2792 and background information on chiropractic in the DVA are also available on ICA's website.

H.R. 2792 is supported by all major chiropractic organizations and contains provisions that would mandate the full-time, in-facility employment of doctors of chiropractic by the DVA, create a permanent chiropractic division within the agency, provide for direct access to chiropractic care without a medical referral, and would establish a program oversight and advisory committee to insure that rapid progress towards full chiropractic coverage is achieved.

Medical, physical therapy and osteopathic groups have mounted an intensive effort to defeat the chiropractic initiative and YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION IS URGENTLY NEEDED TO INSURE THAT H.R. 2792 IS ADOPTED BY THE SENATE. ICA is also asking the Senate Committee to include specific subluxation language in their version to protect chiropractic's unique role in health care delivery.

Contact with your U.S. Senators should be made by phone, FAX or e-mail because regular mail service at the Capitol is not functioning. Many Washington offices are still closed because of anthrax concerns and the urgency of this issue requires immediate action. CONTACT YOUR SENATORS TODAY AND URGE THEIR SUPPORT FOR H.R. 2792!

One of the most successful and enduring seminars over the last several years has been the ICA sponsored, "Chiropractic Without a Doubt" program. The program was initiated by Drs. Christopher Kent and Patrick Gentempo. Over the years thousands of DCs have attended and gained great insight as to the blending of science and chiropractic practice and philosophy. With the increasingly busy schedules of both Drs. Kent and Gentempo, they have decided to relinquish the helm of the program and allow the next step in the evolution of this great seminar to occur.

I am honored to announce that I have been asked by ICA to co-host this program with Dr. Steve Hoffman. Our first program together is December 1-2, 2001 in Phoenix Arizona. This program is not only educational, but also gives you 12 hours of license renewal in Arizona. The program goes from Saturday at 12 noon till 7 PM and again on Sunday from 8:30 AM till 1:30 PM.

1. I will have a cup of coffee or juice in the morning and read a real newspaper like I used to, before the Web.
2. I will eat breakfast with a knife and fork and not with one hand on a mouse.

4. I will make an attempt to clean the house, wash clothes, and plan dinner before even thinking of surfing the Web.
5. I will sit down and write a real paper letter to those unfortunate few friends and family that are Web-deprived.

7. I will read a book ... if I still remember where I kept them.
8. I will listen to those around me and their needs and stop telling them I'll be right there after just one more search.
9. I will not be tempted during TV commercials to check my email.
10. I will try and get out of the house at least once a week, so I can actually see the weather, instead of just looking it up.
11. I will remember that my bank is not forgiving if I forget to balance my checkbook because I was too busy on the Web.
12. Last, but not least, I will remember that I must go to bed sometime... my computer does actually have an "OFF" switch!
