Turmoil
at Palmer - Is Riekeman Out?
At a point when it seems that
things seemed to be going so well, news of turmoil at Palmer seems to be
flooding from Davenport. A series of frantic emails from those close to Palmer
are reporting that maneuvering is occurring in an attempt to remove Dr. Guy
Riekeman and the progress he has made from Palmer.
The information suggests that the
hands behind this move are those of Vicki Palmer and Larry Patten. Vicki
Palmer
is the direct descendant of DD and BJ, and appears to be using her influence in
the Palmer Board to make changes in an attempt to unseat Dr Riekeman and the direction
he has taken Palmer.
Larry Patten is a figure not
unfamiliar at Palmer. He was previously employed at Palmer but left amid
much turmoil and accusations in the late 90's. For more information on
Patten and these events please read the following stories:
Votes
of No Confidence Force Reassessment and Resignation
Palmer
College forced to make administrative changes
Dr. Rob Sinnott, a prominent
Palmer alum and LCP graduate writes, "You may remember Larry Patten as the
ex-Chief Operating Officer removed by an irate faculty and alumni association
after the 1997 fact-finding investigation and subsequent articles in the
Quad
City Times labeled the elements of the Palmer University System as being
‘somewhat deceptive’.
Mr. Patten was offered up to the alumni as a
sacrificial lamb, a move I protested as not being strong enough. I was told by
the alumni powers that they were “cutting off the head of the snake” at that
time. I retorted that “this is not a snake, but a lizard and you are merely
pulling off its tail”. Now, full circle, Vicky Palmer has brought back this
individual as the President of her newly established off-campus “foundation”.
His tentacles are already beginning to clutch around the very heart of all that
IS Palmer. Dr. Barge, my mentor and friend, told me of the skullduggery last
March. He was of the opinion that things were bad and found great frustration in
trying to reason why Vicky Palmer would take apart that which her father would
have been so proud. Dr. Barge was also of the opinion that in the end he could
reason with her, but alas, he is no longer with us in our battle for what is
right.
As always, Rob Sinnott, DC"

One anonymous Palmer voice sent
this email that has been widely distributed.
TODAY begins a fight for
survival of the values and virtues of Chiropractic passed through three
successive generations of Palmer’s into the hands of Vicky Palmer, only to be
cast aside.
TODAY it is up to YOU to take
the time to right the ship of Chiropractic, mend her sails and reset the compass
before she is scuttled by those who fly the flag of piracy in our waters.
TODAY I implore YOU to don
your armor and sharpen your blade for that which lies inevitably ahead.
TODAY we have an opportunity
to make good the promise of Chiropractic to a suffering humanity.
TODAY it is being asked of YOU
to not let those who suffered the slings and arrows of injustice make their
perilous journey for naught.
TODAY I ask YOU to put pen to
paper and chase the opportunists from our ranks.
In the words of the Palmer
family:
“ALL THAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE FORCES OF EVIL TO WIN IN OUR CHIROPRACTIC WORLD
IS FOR ENOUGH GOOD CHIROPRACTORS TO DO NOTHING.”
I ask you, as you are among
the best we have, to do this for a profession that needs YOU--TODAY!
My Comments: It seems to
me that interfering with the success Palmer has enjoyed with Dr Guy at the helm
would be not only a bad move for Palmer, but for chiropractic as well. I
have visited Palmer regularly since 1995. I remember the early days when
students and alumni were both disenchanted with Palmer. Since Dr Riekeman's
arrival, spirits have been high, enrollment up, and momentum has been with
Palmer. Changing this obviously successful trend is an obvious subluxation
of management. I urge those who are interested in this to write or fax the
Palmer Board trustees and share your opinion. The individual addresses, email
addresses and faxes
of the Palmer Board are contained in the letter linked above from Dr. Rob Sinnott. The general address for the Palmer Board is:
Board of Trustees
723 Brady Street, Davenport, IA 52803
Phone: 563-884-5513 Fax: 563-884-5505

Has Life
University Been Given New Life?
At the Life Alumni reception
at the Parker meeting this past weekend, Dr. Ben DeSpain announced that he
believes the worst is behind them. These statement was in specific
reference to the huge $30+ million dollar debt Life has had hanging around their
cervical spine. In his comments he suggested that a benefactor has come
forward to offer relief for the debt. Dr. DeSpain said that an official
announcement should be forthcoming in the near future.
The speculation is that
someone has agreed to either secure the bonds or purchase the campus with the
understanding that Life will not lose the campus in the long run.
Previously, Life had reached a tentative agreement with the neighboring college
to sell the campus to them and lease back only the buildings they needed to
continue and eventually purchase back only those buildings. Under this
previous plan, Life would have forever lost the majority of their beautiful
campus.
With the arrival of this new
offer, Life will retain the entire campus while paying off their debt. At
the writing of this Information Age newsletter, the name of the person, or
persons who have stepped forward to be the benefactor is unknown.
However, Life is not out of
the woods. According to Dr. DeSpain, Life's enrollment is just over 700
students in the DC program. Estimates are that the DC enrollment at Life
must grow to near 1000 in order for Life to balance their budget which is a
requirement for approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
known as SACS. Accreditation with SACS is essential for the school to remain in
operation. Presently a group of supporters and alumni are organized to
increase enrollment in order to give the school the viability it needs to remain
accredited. This group is being headed by Dr Joe Lupo of Michigan. He can be
reached via his email at:
motownjo@comcast.net.
It's Time for Oklahaven's Annual
Fundraiser Have-a-Heart
The following is
a release from Oklahaven on their upcoming Have-a-Heart campaign. We urge
all DCs and students to help this most worthy cause. Their website is:
www.chiropractic4kids.com
I invite you
to "Have-a-Heart" for the children during Valentine’s week, February 9-14, 2004
and share the story of restoring health to children though chiropractic!
Children’s Chiropractic Center/Oklahaven has for over 40 years worked with hurt
children by providing chiropractic care to those who come from all over. This
campaign creates the awareness of Valentine's season and opens hearts to our
mission to promote the wellness of children, especially the very sick and
developmentally challenged. Also, by educating families on the body’s awesome
recuperative power through chiropractic and a natural drug free way of life.
Just this
month, a five-year-old took his first steps at Oklahaven. Two weeks later, he
was not only walking unassisted but able to stand, turn around, and become more
mobile. His parents and our staff shared the joyful experience with tears and
pride.
The children
are asking for your assistance. Annually, during Valentine’s week, many
chiropractic colleges and
hundreds of practicing chiropractors participate in our Have-a-Heart campaign.
Last year, Cleveland Los Angles College of Chiropractic won the Golden Heart
Award.
The process is
simple: just provide paper hearts (be creative!) for those willing to donate to
support the children, log the donors, collect the donations, proudly display the
paper hearts everywhere to show you DO Have-a-Heart, and send the donations to
the Center so we can thank the donors!
A complete
event packet is available to you. We hope your student body and clinic patients
will respond with great enthusiasm to share the chiropractic story!
Your support
in this event is very important to the Children. Please call or email Oklahaven
at Oklahaven@flash.com to confirm your involvement and begin preparing for this
exciting and wonderful event! Thanks for your time and consideration to benefit
our future. We look forward to working with you.
